Comicpalooza 2025: A Chilled-Out Con Experience

As is tradition, we at T3 Media Studios were back at the George R. Brown Convention Center for Comicpalooza 2025! Our hosts, Chris and Joy Fagan, recently shared their thoughts on this year's convention, covering everything from the overall vibe to their favorite moments and a few minor criticisms.

The Vibe and Venue Changes

This year, Chris and Joy immediately noticed a different atmosphere. Joy described it as "more chilled out" and "low-key" compared to previous years. They observed several changes that contributed to this altered vibe:

  • Missing Red Carpet: The usual large red carpet with a logo backdrop in the center of the convention floor was gone. This made the space feel "very empty" and took away a popular photo opportunity for attendees.

  • Spaced-Out Exhibits: While good for traffic flow and reducing crowding, spreading out the exhibits made the convention feel "way more open" and contributed to the overall quieter atmosphere.

  • Seating Shortage: A major point of contention was the lack of seating in the eating areas on Saturday. Tables were only brought back on Sunday when attendance was lower, leading Chris to speculate it felt "very corporaty," prioritizing exhibitor space over attendee comfort.

New Additions and Highlights

Despite these changes, there were plenty of positives and memorable moments:

  • Wrestling Arena: The addition of a wrestling arena seemed to be a big hit, drawing crowds and adding a new dynamic to the convention floor.

  • Cosplayer Engagement: The spirit of the cosplayers remained strong! Chris and Joy took many pictures and conducted more interviews this year, capturing the creativity and passion of the attendees.

  • Meeting the Stars of Resident Alien: A major highlight was meeting members of the Resident Alien cast. They attended a panel and took pictures with Alice Wetlund (who has a Star Trek podcast and is a huge Trekkie), Corey Reynolds, and Sarah Tomco (who runs an Etsy store selling upcycled earrings). They even witnessed Allan Tudyk signing random items on stage during the Q&A, a truly funny and spontaneous moment.

Cosplay Chronicles

Chris and Joy continued their cosplay traditions and introduced new ones:

  • Ruby Rod and The Flight Attendant: Chris's iconic Ruby Rod costume (from The Fifth Element) continues to be a crowd favorite, drawing enthusiastic reactions. He even had a "Ruby off" with another cosplayer in a leopard-print Ruby Rod costume! Joy continued her Flight Attendant cosplay.

  • Sally Ali Homage: In a special homage to Joy's birthday, they introduced new cosplays: DJ Lance Rock and Sally Ali from Yo Gabba Gabba!

Criticisms and Hopes for Next Year

The main criticism for Comicpalooza 2025 was the lack of seating in the eating areas. Chris emphasized, "Please don't don't take away the the the seats for at the at the eating area that that's don't do that that's about that's my main criticism."

Overall, despite the slightly different vibe and a few logistical hiccups, Chris and Joy had a blast. Comicpalooza remains a fun event, and they're already looking forward to attending next year.
