Surviving the Heat, Tunnels, & New Hair: Our Fan Expo Dallas 2026 Recap

Every convention run comes with its own brand of chaos, but this year at Fan Expo Dallas brought a whole new set of survival rules. From navigating venue construction in late-summer Texas heat to leveling up our cosplay craftsmanship to 100%, here is the breakdown of our weekend on the floor.

Underground Tunnels & Construction Chaos

The biggest curveball this year was the venue setup. Due to ongoing facility construction, Fan Expo Dallas was bumped back from its usual early-summer slot to late summer, fundamentally shifting both the weather and the convention flow:

  • The Lost Skywalk: The enclosed connection between the Omni Hotel and the convention center was completely offline. What used to be an easy, air-conditioned stroll became a full-sun downhill trek across hot asphalt.

  • The Dallas Pedestrian Tunnels: We finally treated Dallas’s underground tunnel network as a reality rather than an urban myth. Skipping past the imagined Ninja Turtles sewer vibes, those tunnels shaved off half the sun exposure on the trek over.

  • Celebrity Cancellations & Floor Flow: The calendar shift impacted guest availability, causing several high-profile last-minute cancellations. Between tighter floor layouts and cramped autograph zones, navigating through crowds was considerably tighter than in previous years.

Leveling Up the Cosplay: Ruby Rhod

This marked our first year stepping onto the floor in nearly 100% custom-built gear. Moving past off-the-rack pieces meant learning on the fly, focusing heavily on custom sewing, lighter fabrics, and serious detailing:

  • The Wig Engineering: Moving on from five-year-old foam cones required learning proper wig caps, weave tracks, skin adhesives, and blending realistic sideburns.

  • The Iconic Cane: Featuring custom-molded top accents, a glowing clear cylinder, and internally routed wiring to keep the USB power bank flush inside the base.

  • Floor Reactions: Drivers literally rolled down their windows along the street to yell out quotes. From fellow convention-goers to event volunteers specifically asking for their only photo of the weekend, the custom details completely shifted the energy.

Highlight of the Floor: Reno 911! & Black Dynamite Moments

While massive autograph lines kept spontaneous celebrity floor interactions to a minimum (aside from catching a shoutout from Tomer Capone, aka "Frenchie" from The Boys), our standout interaction came from the hilarious duo of Thomas Lennon and Cedric Yarbrough:

  • Thomas Lennon: Undisputed winner of the best convention wardrobe decision by rocking the full Lieutenant Dangle uniform in peak humidity. He worked the queue personally, tossing out high fives and declaring the signing a "life-changing event."

  • Cedric Yarbrough: We got to ask him directly about his legendary line in Black Dynamite ("I sell drugs to the community!"). Cedric confirmed on the spot that the iconic quote was completely improvised on set. An incredible reveal for longtime fans of the film.

  • The Handlers: The duo’s crew took notice of the craftsmanship right away, with their team asking Joy about her costume work and scrub cap tailoring while praising the detail on our Fifth Element builds.

Looking Ahead: Pack Light, Plan Deep

The biggest takeaways from this convention run come down to pure logistics:

  • Bag Strategy: Separating dedicated equipment bags from cosplay travel bags is non-negotiable for future multi-day con coverage.

  • The Flight Rule: Never spend high-dollar travel money or cross-country flights to see a single guest who might face a filming conflict. Go for the whole ecosystem panels, local creators, and backup encounters.
