Superman Soars: My Take on the New DCU Kick-Off!
Rating: 4/5 Stars (Highly Recommended!)
Joy and I just walked out of the theater, buzzing after seeing the new **Superman** movie, and I've got to tell you, I really enjoyed it!
Nod to the Classics
As an OG Christopher Reeve fan, I went in with a certain expectation, and this film really delivered. It felt like a strong **homage to that classic Reeve-era Superman**, taking me back to the style of those early movies. Joy, on the other hand, heard it was going to be an homage to the animated series, and she totally felt that was the case too. James Gunn, who I'm a big fan of for his writing, definitely put his unique spin on things while staying true to the spirit of Superman. This felt like the Superman we've been waiting for.
The Cast That Shines (and One That's Terrific!)
Let's talk about the performances. Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane was great, but for me,
**Mr. Terrific** absolutely stole every scene he was in. He was, well, terrific! Jimmy Olsen was also pretty funny, and it was cool to see Nathan Fillion, who I liked in that Netflix zombie diet show, pop up here too. James Gunn just has a knack for casting and bringing together a fantastic team.
My Superman: David Corenswet
Now, I know there are a lot of die-hard Henry Cavill lovers out there, and I get it. But honestly, **David Corenswet *is* Superman**. As an OG Reeve fan, I think Corenswet did that legacy justice big time. Cavill was great in his own way, but Corenswet's portrayal truly captures the **hope, the joy, the inspiration**—the very word "hope" itself that Superman embodies. I think this James Gunn version of Superman, in terms of the comic book spirit, is a tad bit better.
Minor Gripes & Major Fun
I'll be honest, there were a couple of parts that felt a little unnecessary, but I'll need to watch it again (which I definitely will!) to really pin them down. My son even thought the beginning was a little slow, but once it got going, it *really* got going.
Joy loved the **humor**, which is classic James Gunn from *Guardians of the Galaxy*, and she even noticed some clever, subtle political nods that were pretty funny.
The Final Word: Don't Miss It!
Overall, I heartily recommend this movie. You're going to want to go see it. We're probably going to see it again soon ourselves. It's funny, it's exciting, and for anyone who thought it wouldn't have enough action (looking at you, Snyder Cut fans!), you're in for a huge surprise. There's plenty of "punches to the face," if you know what I mean! All the criticisms people had before even seeing it were completely off base. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
That's our quick take right out of the theater here at Regal. Go check it out!
