Hey guys! Chris here, and welcome back to the blog. I just got back from an advanced screening of Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book, and let me tell you—it’s been a long time coming for this review. After months of anticipation and excitement building up around this film, I finally had the chance to experience it for myself, and I can hardly contain my thoughts. This is a film that many have been eagerly awaiting, and I’m thrilled to share my impressions with you. I’ve been meaning to sit down and talk about this film for a while, especially with the buzz it’s been getting leading up to release. The movie officially drops in just two days, and I felt a strong urge to get my thoughts out there before the masses flood into theaters. What I witnessed on that screen... honestly blew me away. Disney has been knocking it out of the park with these live-action remakes, from the enchanting Maleficent to the highly anticipated Beauty and the Beast, which is just around the corner. But The Jungle Book? I truly didn’t expect this level of quality and craftsmanship.
Let’s talk about visuals first—this movie looks incredible. I kept asking myself, “How are they doing this?” The artistry and technology behind the visuals are nothing short of groundbreaking. Every tree, every ripple of water, every drop of mud looked insanely real. Yet, I know it’s all green screen—except for the kid playing Mowgli, everything else is digital! But the tech used here immerses you so deeply in the jungle environment. I mean, I was sitting in that theater thinking, “They’ve got to be throwing real water on this kid, right?” It was that convincing. Huge shoutout to Jon Favreau (yeah, the guy who directed Iron Man)—he directed the heck out of this. If someone told me Spielberg did it, I wouldn’t have even questioned it. It’s that cinematic. Favreau brought something truly magical to this movie, showcasing his ability to weave together stunning visuals with a compelling narrative. He’s proven he’s not just a superhero guy—he’s a storyteller, period, capable of creating an experience that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Now here’s the big thing I really want to talk about—why I won’t be taking my kids to see this movie. As much as I loved it—and trust me, I did—this movie is intense. I grew up watching the animated Jungle Book, and now that I’m a dad, my kids are around the same age I was back then. But this new version? It’s darker. It’s scarier. There’s one scene—Shere Khan (voiced by the incredibly talented Idris Elba) shows up—and no spoilers, but it made me jump. Like, actually jump. I’m a grown man! This isn’t the cuddly Disney villain you remember from your childhood. This is Shere Khan turned full-blown nightmare. He’s got Scar-level menace, striking fear into the hearts of viewers. So if your kids are sensitive or under a certain age, I highly recommend you screen it first before letting them watch it. I’m glad I did, as it allowed me to gauge the film's intensity and decide what’s appropriate for my children.
That said, let’s not forget the heart and humor in this film. Bill Murray as Baloo? Perfect. Absolutely hilarious, without losing the warmth we expect from that character. His comedic timing and delivery made every scene he was in a joy to watch. King Louie had me cracking up and slightly terrified at the same time—Christopher Walken brought some serious presence to that role. His rendition of “I Wanna Be Like You” was a standout moment, and all I could think was “more cowbell!” Scarlett Johansson voicing Kaa was another great choice—creepy, seductive, and mysterious, she added a layer of intrigue that kept me on the edge of my seat. And the young actor playing Mowgli—Neel Sethi—carried this movie with remarkable skill. That kid’s got charisma and talent, and I’m genuinely hoping for big things from him in the future. His performance was heartfelt and genuine, making you root for him throughout his journey. Overall, I give The Jungle Book a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It’s a cinematic experience worth seeing on the big screen—but parents, take this warning seriously: this is not your childhood Jungle Book. It’s a fresh take that redefines the classic tale while maintaining its core essence.
