I PEG YOUR PARDON!
Since the release of The Hunting Wives on Netflix, there has been a 50 Shades meets Bridgerton level of worked-up viewers who swear that the erotica in this show is on a whole other level. A few episodes in, my wife and I were like, "Is that it? Liberal, anxious, innocent newbie corrupted by the sex of the South?" Don't get me wrong—there are plenty of freaky McNasties in southeast Texas to go around, but this wasn't the end-all, be-all for erotica. Then we figured it out: everyone online was in a tizzy about "THE SCENE."
For those who don't know, Oscar winner Jaime Ray Newman plays Callie, Margo's (played by Malin Akerman) close confidante, a talented markswoman, and second-in-command within the group who feels threatened by the new girl, Sophie O'Neil (played by Brittany Snow). There is plenty of mean girl energy to go around. When you see exactly how close some of these ladies really are, you're left wondering, "Is this what all the fuss is about?"—until you get to the moment when Callie and her husband, played by Branton Box (Sheriff Johnny), are in a sex scene themselves, with his wife behind him in bed, thrusting till the cows come home. Once the moment reaches its climax, you see Callie clean off her hand on the bed sheets, turn to the nightstand to her left, and put away the strap-on she was wearing—and wearing her husband out with.
Both my wife and I said, "That's it? This is the moment that has everyone going bananas?" Not the taboo, underage, illegal relationship with Margo and her friend Jill's son Brad (played by George Ferrier)? Not Margo convincing a sober alcoholic to drink up, though it took little convincing. I mean, you ask Sophie exactly two times to cheat on her husband with more minors, another woman, drink, drive, and pop pills, and it's a sure thing.
What we liked was the dynamic between the wives, but the hot action was not as epic as people are making it out to be. I'm hoping for a second season—I love a good whodunit that leads into a twisty cliffhanger. And even though the moment was not as epic for me as it was for a lot of the normies out there, Jaime Ray Newman is my favorite actor in the series so far. I was shocked. I went in knowing what I was getting into with Malin (from Harold & Kumar—if you know, you know). Brittany has been a favorite of mine for just as long. I went in hating Callie, like I was supposed to, then somehow found my way to her being my favorite of the wives. Maybe that scene did have an impact—LOL.
